Ori and Arye

I've started documenting daily walks in the streets of Jerusalem of my sister's son Ori (4) and his grandfather Arye (70). Arye holds the cell phone and I record their dialogs on Skype here in San Francisco as they walk through the streets of Jerusalem, its public yards and gardens. Occasionally they go back in time lead by Arye's memories from when he was younger. Many times they are taken by Ori to imaginary spots.

I then draw a visual stream of the walk I heard. Or thought I heard. Ori is in red NextExit font. Arye is in blue NarkisClassic font.

the people i'm interested in doing the documention with

there are a couple of people whom i'm interested in doing the documentation with (i was talking very generally in class today and didn't mention who they are and what's my interest):


1. the owner of the market place at the corner of my block. we talked a little bit before - he's in his sixties probably, came to the us from iran and has been living here for a couple of decades. what was compelling for me in his story is that his family and business are already "rooted" here in the us, but he actually doesn't like it here. he's still here because they are.

2. the family that runs the cafe at the corner of the next block. i visit there occasionally and whenever i eat their baklava it tastes like home. it looks like a family business and i usually see behind the counter the parents, son and daughter. last time that i was there i told the son how much i like their baklava so he told me it's lebanese, that his mom makes it, and that her special ingredient is the love she puts in it.
what i actually wanted to do if i make the documentation there, is to go over their whole menu (because everything i had there so far is ssssooooo good), one dish at a visit, taking a picture of the dish and writing down a story or a quote they could share with me which is associated with it.

3. my acquaintance l., a psychologist who has been living in the us for a long time, but is originally from palestine, and is involved (i think mostly by donating money) in peace projects between palestinians and israelies. my interest in making the documentation with her is her experience of being an immigrant.

thoughts following last class

i wish to find those possible ways to exist as an artist which don't necessarily go through the galleries and museums.
some questions that came up re (also in other classes): is art a practice and gallery the essential space to trace and discuss it; visual documentation as a piece by itself, in relation to the original piece and its importance outside the gallery; the significance of authorship and recognition of the artist.

currently i don't have a specific person in mind, which i want to document. i would like to give a random aspect to finding this person - not based only on parameters that reflect my typical interests. i may not limit myself to my physical environment and am interested in documenting a person in the virtual space. i like text the most as a mean of documentation and intuitively prefer it over image and sound.
